The Irish Blessing

Updated: Apr 4, 2020

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone! ☘️

Although my name is Kelly, I’m not really Irish, but my maiden surname is Ker, which is Scottish. Close enough!

One of my fondest musical memories growing up was singing with my sisters and my mom. We had a nice little quartet going, and this Irish Blessing was one of our favorites. Although we weren’t a barbershop quartet (our arrangement was SSAA — sopranos and altos), our blend was particularly good because our voices were familial. Of course, not as perfect as the four Julies in this recording! The last two lines of the prayer are particularly appropriate in regards to our isolation.

Soli Deo Gloria!

May the road rise to greet you,

May the wind be always at your back,

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

May the rain fall soft upon your fields,

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
